    The tight program of scientific research cruises usually does not leave enough time for thorough tests of new research equipment and their system components, nor for extensive pilot and handling training. For this reason, ship time was requested for sea trials of two types of autonomous (not tethered) underwater vehicles owned by GEOMAR, the manned 400-meter submersible JAGO and the Hover-AUVs ANTON and LUISE, type Girona500. The aim was to test several technical and operational aspects with both vehicles at locations with differently structured terrain (from flat ground to steep rocky slopes) and to water depths of up to 500 meters. The Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily were chosen as test area. The volcanic islands offer sheltered sea conditions at their leeway, and bottom currents are usually weak or absent. Rocky and steep slopes are located in short distances to areas with flat underwater topography, providing ideal test conditions

    Development of acetabular retroversion in LCPD hips-an observational radiographic study from early stage to healing.

    BACKGROUND Acetabular retroversion is observed frequently in healed Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD). Currently, it is unknown at which stage and with what prevalence retroversion occurs because in non-ossified hips, retroversion cannot be measured with standard radiographic parameters. METHODS In a retrospective, observational study; we examined pelvic radiographs in children with LCPD the time point of occurrence of acetabular retroversion and calculated predictive factors for retroversion. Between 2004 and 2017, we included 55 children with a mean age of 5.7 ± 2.4 years at diagnosis. The mean radiographic follow-up was 7.0 ± 4.4 years. We used two new radiographic parameters which allow assessment of acetabular version in non-ossified hips: the pelvic width index and the ilioischial angle. They are based on the fact that the pelvic morphology differs depending on the acetabular version. These parameters were compared among the four Waldenström stages and to the contralateral side. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictive factors for acetabular retroversion. RESULTS Both parameters differed significantly among the stages of Waldenström (p < 0.003 und 0.038, respectively). A more retroverted acetabulum was found in stage II and III (prevalence ranging from 54 to 56%) compared to stage I and IV (prevalence ranging from 23 to 39%). In hips of the contralateral side without LCPD, the prevalence of acetabular retroversion was 0% in all stages for both parameters. Predictive factors for retroversion were younger age at stage II and IV, collapse of the lateral pillar in stage II or a non-dysplastic hip. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study evaluating acetabular version in children with LCPD from early stage to healing. In the developing hip, LCPD may result in acetabular retroversion and is most prevalent in the fragmentation (stage II) and early healing stage (stage III). Partial correction of acetabular retroversion can occur after healing. This has a potential clinical impact on the timing and type of surgical correction, especially in pelvic osteotomies for correction of acetabular version.     Ecological equivalence: a realistic assumption for niche theory as a testable alternative to neutral theory

    Hubbell's 2001 neutral theory unifies biodiversity and biogeography by modelling steady-state distributions of species richness and abundances across spatio-temporal scales. Accurate predictions have issued from its core premise that all species have identical vital rates. Yet no ecologist believes that species are identical in reality. Here I explain this paradox in terms of the ecological equivalence that species must achieve at their coexistence equilibrium, defined by zero net fitness for all regardless of intrinsic differences between them. I show that the distinction of realised from intrinsic vital rates is crucial to evaluating community resilience. An analysis of competitive interactions reveals how zero-sum patterns of abundance emerge for species with contrasting life-history traits as for identical species. I develop a stochastic model to simulate community assembly from a random drift of invasions sustaining the dynamics of recruitment following deaths and extinctions. Species are allocated identical intrinsic vital rates for neutral dynamics, or random intrinsic vital rates and competitive abilities for niche dynamics either on a continuous scale or between dominant-fugitive extremes. Resulting communities have steady-state distributions of the same type for more or less extremely differentiated species as for identical species. All produce negatively skewed log-normal distributions of species abundance, zero-sum relationships of total abundance to area, and Arrhenius relationships of species to area. Intrinsically identical species nevertheless support fewer total individuals, because their densities impact as strongly on each other as on themselves. Truly neutral communities have measurably lower abundance/area and higher species/abundance ratios. Neutral scenarios can be parameterized as null hypotheses for testing competitive release, which is a sure signal of niche dynamics.     Contrasted Effects of Diversity and Immigration on Ecological Insurance in Marine Bacterioplankton Communities

    The ecological insurance hypothesis predicts a positive effect of species richness on ecosystem functioning in a variable environment. This effect stems from temporal and spatial complementarity among species within metacommunities coupled with optimal levels of dispersal. Despite its importance in the context of global change by human activities, empirical evidence for ecological insurance remains scarce and controversial. Here we use natural aquatic bacterial communities to explore some of the predictions of the spatial and temporal aspects of the ecological insurance hypothesis. Addressing ecological insurance with bacterioplankton is of strong relevance given their central role in fundamental ecosystem processes. Our experimental set up consisted of water and bacterioplankton communities from two contrasting coastal lagoons. In order to mimic environmental fluctuations, the bacterioplankton community from one lagoon was successively transferred between tanks containing water from each of the two lagoons. We manipulated initial bacterial diversity for experimental communities and immigration during the experiment. We found that the abundance and production of bacterioplankton communities was higher and more stable (lower temporal variance) for treatments with high initial bacterial diversity. Immigration was only marginally beneficial to bacterial communities, probably because microbial communities operate at different time scales compared to the frequency of perturbation selected in this study, and of their intrinsic high physiologic plasticity. Such local “physiological insurance” may have a strong significance for the maintenance of bacterial abundance and production in the face of environmental perturbations

    Contrasting perspectives of strategy making: applications in 'Hyper' environments

    We revisit the original meaning of turbulence in the socioecological tradition of organization studies and outline a perspective on strategy making grounded in that tradition. This entails a contrast of the socioecological perspective with the more well-known neoclassical perspective on strategy, based on their core decision premises and their different understandings of environmental turbulence. We argue that while some mainstream strategy approaches have taken important strides toward addressing advanced turbulence, many others remain tethered to the neoclassical origins of the strategy discipline and are insufficiently responsive to the new landscape of strategy that now characterizes many industries. This new landscape is construed as the ‘hyper environment’, in which positive feedback processes and emergent field effects produce high volatility. We use two case illustrations from the US healthcare sector to examine how neoclassical and socioecological perspectives contribute to strategizing in hyper environments.     An integrated web-based approach for near real-time mission monitoring

    For years, unmanned vehicle systems have been an integral part of scientific field campaigns and commercial applications. To monitor and safely command a diverse fleet of autonomous vehicles, a system is required to integrate and display relevant data of all participating devices. Using web-based applications, such systems become accessible everywhere and at any time from any web-enabled terminal. Furthermore, this will establish exciting new possibilities for operators and scientists to collaborate in real-time. We would like to introduce our web-based application Navigator that aims to provide a new look on monitoring and visualization of cooperative missions of unmanned vehicles. Despite the fact that our software was initially developed to observe marine operations, the backend of our system provides a generic data structure, which can be populated by customizable adapters to interface various vehicle systems and third-party data providers. The web-based frontend of Navigator offers an interactive map display for situational awareness, integrating vehicle movements and off-site data overlays to create a comprehensive overview of the ongoing mission. In addition, a dashboard and interactive chart module complete the application interface and allow for an observation of vehicle condition, navigational information and measurement data in near real-time
